Rui Zhang, PhD

Principal Investigator

I am an Associate Professor (tenured) and McKnight Presidential Fellow in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care & Health Systems in College of Pharmacy and the Institute for Health Informatics. I am also a faculty in Master's of Science in Data Science program. I obtained my PhD degree in Health Informatics from the University of Minnesota in 2013, and Master’s degree in Informatics at the University of Iowa. My research interests are clinical natural language processing, text mining, literature-based discovery, complementary and alternative medicine informatics, machine learning, and statistic analysis.

  • 2020 - Received a supplement award from the National Institute on Aging to study the effects of dietary supplement on Alzheimer's Disease using EHR data and NLP techniques.
  • 2020 - Serve on the Editorial Board of Journal of American Medicial Informatics Association.
  • 2019 - Named as McKnight Presidential Fellow (2019-2022)
  • 2018 - Postdoctoal associate's manuscript nominated as Student Paper Competition Finalist in AMIA 2018 Informatics Summit.
  • 2017 – Principal Investigator on a 4-year (2017-2021) NIH R01 research project grant 1R01AT009457
  • 2017 – PhD student’s paper won the second place in the Student Paper Competition, AMIA 2017 Joint Summits on Translational Science
